Four hours of sleep... Coming all the way back to the room for your badge (again)... Contemplating the apple which you pick up at breakfast and never eat... And countless, countless (countless, countless) runs up and down the stairs.

Second day of the conference, and it seems falling into place. Seems is the keyword perhaps though... Falling is also an important word; sometimes it seems falling apart, falling off the edge, falling 'out of court', or slipping treacherously through the fingers. But gradually less so, as we learn. Somebody (we all know who, but...

I read this poem to the audience in an interactive session of the caux conference "Everybody Counts". A number of the attendees asked for copies of it so I decided to put it on my blog for all. It also goes in line with the theme of "Leading Change for a Sustainable World", a world free of injustice, aggression and war.

We're not as we think we are:
Mere individual beings.
Those we meet and get to know
Shape our thoughts, our very feelings.
Diverse and different as they may be,
...

For those of you, who already did the 2-3 hour hike from Caux up to Rochers-de-Naye, the Summit of the Caux mountain, know what I’m...

I was slightly nervous in the few days leading up the Caux Forum. I didn't know much about this conference, except that there would be well-known and well-respected speakers and attendees, and a Call to Action. Names like Clare Short, Rajmohan Gandhi and Otis Moss were swirling around in my mind. I thought the speakers would likely keep to themselves, but I was completely wrong.

I found myself sitting at a lunch or dinner table with Hans Herren and Brendan McAllister. In passing, I was greeted with smiles from Mohamed Sahnoun and Luc Gnacadja. Even...

I was woken up the other night at 2am. My ‘bip’ was ringing continuously. A fire alarm! I tried to get up and get dressed – but was forbidden by my wife. I’m retired from the fire and emergency team, after slipping and falling in the stairs last year, running to answer an alarm, and seriously breaking my wrist, which has still not recovered. So the only way that I can re-find peace is to take the battery out of my little electronic device.

In the morning, I discover that it was indeed again a false alarm, so not the...

I fell in love with Caux the minute I stepped on the little train that goes up to Rocher de Naye. I had imagined this place being beautiful, but it was a lot more beautiful than I ever imagined. However, it is not just the scenery that makes this place magical. There is something special inside the Mountain House. Maybe it is the way everyone smiles at each other, maybe it is because every one works so hard to do their part for this House to keep functioning properly, or maybe it is the combination of every participant's dream to make a better...

Halfway through the Human Security Forum, and Caux is bursting with past and present ambassadors, politicians, UN officers and representatives of NGOs. For most of them this isn’t the first international conference they’ve been to, nor the first one on Human Security. So what makes Caux different?

Certainly the mix of people is part of it. As the hosts of the opening meeting introduced the different national groups and personalities present, my neighbour, a much-conferenced journalist, muttered, ‘You wouldn’t find such an eclectic...
